When Lee Anderson and her parents discovered a new world teeming with life, it was the dream of every explorer they were rich beyond their imaginations. But tragedy struck when a herd of creatures overran their camp and killed her parents.

The only other adult in her life had been their partner Gordon, who adopted her as parent. Which didn’t turn out to be easy, because he wasn’t human. He was a large intelligent alien, and to Lee he was Uncle Gordon, but neither his race – the Derf – nor Humans were gracious about accepting their family relationship.

After various misadventures and strife they made others accept their relationship, and also found that while they might not share blood, they both had exploring in the blood. Unhappy in civilization they decided to explore again – going really deep this time, far beyond established frontiers. They met other alien civilizations, made claim to new sources of wealth that rivaled their previous claims in value, and then headed home to present their new claims on Earth.

But a lot of things didn’t make sense. Warnings came from their Fargoer allies that not everything on Earth was as it seemed to be. This is the story of their return voyage, and the unexpected mysteries in what they had left behind.

Secrets in the Stars Third book in the Family Law series eBook Mackey Chandler

Secrets in the Stars is the third in the Family Law series and continues to delight the reader. Lee (teenage human) and Gordon (middle-aged derf) have more adventures with their Little Fleet and return from Deep Space to Derfhome and Earth to upset the status quo. Although quite serious, there are lighter moments when outsiders to society view things taken for granted by others. I admit to giggles at a couple of points, although my reaction to Lee's possible romance was mixed. 117 years is quite an age gap.

The author has chosen to merge this series with his April series with this book. That is not a real problem since the Family Law series is set at least a century later. It was handled okay, but was not a major thrill.

Errors were present, but except for a couple of places (Far Away and Fargone mixups) didn't disturb me too much. Although, I did find more while rereading it. There is also a plot issue with the cruiser Murphy's Law. I am afraid the fans rushed the publication a little too much. I really like this series and recommend that newcomers start with Family Law. Great!!

Secrets in the Stars Third book in the Family Law series eBook Mackey Chandler Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series. This one starts slow, but the secret revealed at the end sets up book four. Skipping this one would leave a gap in the storyline.
This stuff just gets better the farther you go with it!

Characters are interesting and consistent, the tying of the previous series into this series was well done, and I enjoyed it a lot.
I really enjoyed this book. I like Lee' s character development throughout the series. The author seems to have strong opinions about raising kids. I kind of agree about the lack of life skills not being taught. Loved the space exploration. I enjoyed this series better than the April, mostly because the multiple partner relationships were just to weird for me and took away from the storyline. Really anticipating the next book. Please hurry!
outstanding follow on to Alice!. entire series needs to have Prequel between Alice and Family law to fill in the blank years and adventures of Alice and the continuing story of Family Law. Waiting for Mackey Chandler to continue the family law and alice adventures and reading all of his shorter books on kindle. Mackey Chandler is a new force in SCI-FI like Alan black
Nice tie-in with his other series (April). I wonder if he'll have additional cross-over stories between the two. I certainly hope so.
Mackey Chandler writes fun, witty science fiction about spunky heroes and heroines with great alien companions and enjoyable adventures. I used to think the human and other bureaucrat "bad guys" were mere caricatures. Events of the last few years have made me much more able to suspend my disbelief and roll with the story.
This review is for the entire (4 books currently) series "Family law". Several years back I got the first book, and after reading it I decided that while the characters were well written, the universe was interesting, and I really liked the plot, the author's preaching of his political agenda and treating "American" and "Human" as synonyms, even when it makes no sense for his characters to do so were too much for me so I put the series aside (although with some disappointment since the characters were quite interesting). A few days ago I had nothing to do and picked up book two and read it in almost one sitting then immediately got book three and then four. The later books do not have any issues with the author describing American traits/culture and "human", or "Earther" and while there might still be some preaching it was subtle enough I didn't notice it.

However I do not think the later books would stand very well on their own - each book relies heavily on the previous books, so while I'd recommend the series to anyone who enjoys space exploration stories you should only get the books if you intend to get the whole series.
